Sidewalk Snippet ~ {10/29/12}

We have talked about the sidewalk pedestrians and how we get passing comments of encouragement. This one has to be shared.

There were two runners passing by and they were stopped at the traffic light on the corner I was standing. One runner pointed her finger at me and said, “I want you to know I am pro-life.” I thought, “Oh no, here we go.”

Then they continued, “But I support what you are doing out here by supporting these women. You are doing the right thing. The other people shouldn’t be out here. Thank you.”

What a pleasant surprise! Another lesson in not assuming.

  1. I had an undergrad professor who said she was pro-life, but that she refused to deny access to women who were not. It’s rather nice to have these little reminders when we seem to be fighting such a black and white battle.

  2. Another shining example of how our limited labels don’t encompass how we all feel about abortion.

    The jogger ~like my religious parents-in-law~ are pro-lifer personally but pro-choice for everyone else because they wouldn’t presume to tell others how to live. Despite how pro-life personally the jogger and my parents-in-law are they wouldn’t be caught dead obstructing other’s rights by protesting a clinic or trying to shame women into keeping a pregnancy they feel they shouldn’t keep.

    Must of been quite a lift in your day to hear there are pro-lifers out there who support what you do!

    Ps – I bring up my PIL because despite how personally pro-life personally they are (8 kids), they did give me and my hubby the money for our abortion when we needed it – (debt was repaid in full the next week).

    Pro-life =\= anti-choice!

    • Oubli,

      The experience did give my day a lift. I know people like your parent-in-laws who are pro-life, but respect pro-choice for everyone else. I’ve even known one couple who lent the money for an abortion too. We just don’t expect to see any of them while we are at the clinic. It was nice to hear their words.

      Thanks,
