Sidewalk Snippet ~ {5/07/12}

There were no clients around when one of the AWC staff asked me if I knew what kind of bush was blooming in front of EMW. When I said I didn’t but it was pretty, she was interested enough to ask me if another escort would know.

I walked down the sidewalk and asked our “plant expert”, but C didn’t know either. I told her we didn’t know, but if we remembered later we would look it up for her. She thanked me.

That’s when D chimed in. “You should be as concerned about the babies they are killing in there as you are concerned about the plants. You don’t know what you are doing.”

Proving once again, engagement with antis is never okay. It always turns into a confrontation even when you are talking about plants.

REMINDER: If you are interested in escorting, particularly if you’re willing to hold space on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, don’t forget the training on May 9th at 6:00P.  Training is not required, but it’s helpful.

REMINDER: Our annual  fund drive Pledge-A-Picketer is NOW!
The Saturday before Mother’s Day is the biggest protester day of the year.  It also is the date  where we count protesters for donations to support the pro-choice effort and the escorts.  You can pledge a certain amount for each protester showing up that morning. If you prefer, you can also make a straight monetary donation.

Use this form to make your pledge:

    • Oubli,

      Thank you for the offer. I really would like to know what it is. It is a shrub and is not blooming any more. The flowers were unusual. We believe it may be in the Mock Orange family, but not a Mock Orange. The leaves are similar. The shrub is about 6′ tall now and full grown. The flowers were 5-point, white and pendulous. (A lot like white spiders hanging on the branches, if that makes sense.) Every time I went to the clinic when it was blooming I meant to get a picture, then I got busy with the clients and would forget. Next Spring I will try to remember again!

  1. It is true. Recently we were escorting patients outside our clinic when a dad and two daughters went skating by. One of the little girls fell and skinned her knee and began crying so the dad sat down on the sidewalk and pulled her into his lap. We all did the collective “Ooooh! Poor baby!” The lead anti then said, “You think THAT hurt?”, implying that abortion hurts more. He repeated it under his breath for about thirty seconds. What a jerk.

  2. It’s funny, isn’t it, how disappointing that feels. When there’s a moment of connectedness with one of the protesters and then that harsh response, even if it’s from a different protester, is more of a shock. A quick reminder that at least some of them aren’t able to see past their own rhetoric.

    Yeah, non-engagement is probably best.
