orange is the new white

silent intimidation

This is Scott.  He often stands quietly and calmly with his ridiculously large icon in a hot spot where the prayer line meets the door area and access from the busy street.  His tactic is to stand or kneel while slowly encroaching on the space that the escorts try to hold in the prayer line his tool aids him in this action.

We hold the space in order to allow people coming from the parking lot across the street or being dropped off to access the door.   Over the last year the struggle for this space has escalated from one or two escorts in the street between parked cars to 4-6 escorts needing to stay firmly in place or the praying protester simply will not let us through.  The local police have a hard time reffereeing the feuding sides.  They have little knowledge of FACE, and even less power to enforce it.  Here in KY the laws are very much anti choice, and even if we do luck into a pro-choice cop, their boss will discourage them from “taking a side” by enforcing most laws.

As for Scott’s intimidation factor:  i know it’s cold, and i know you’re racist AND sexist, but must you really conjure the image of a clansman? Really?

On the other side of the street, again we walk:

  1. thank you! well said.

you may have already read the post about rape culture where the author stated, “The attitude that the bodies of women and queers are fair game as a battle field for social conformity is exactly the place where reproductive justice and rape culture intersect.”

We must admit it. It is a battlefield. We stand for the right of a woman to have an abortion if she chooses to. We stand for the rights of this woman, as well as her family, friends, or whomever she brings to support her in her choice, to enter and exit this medical provider’s office freely and without duress.

The antichoicers are forever asking me why I make women get abortions, or why I push women to kill their babies. I always reply that it is not my choice, it is the woman’s choice. Also, I point out that an acorn is not an oak tree and a fertilized egg cell is not a baby.

Some of the other escorts, who are from other countries, have told me that there are no protestors at the medical clinics in their home country. They say it is as simple as going to the dentist to have a bad tooth pulled. It is as simple as going to your doctor to have a wart removed. No protestors. No signs. No icons of Mary and Jesus with burning candles. No small children forced to kneel, pray or sing on the sidewalk. Nobody shoving pamphlets in your face and screaming, “Please don’t kill your wart!”

What we are facing each morning is insanity. It is intolerable. I am outraged that this is tolerated by the people of Louisville, allowed by our police, and endured by the patients.

There is no excuse for abuse. And this is sidewalk bullying, complete with verbal abuse, spiritual threats, emotional abuse, and often physical blocking or shoving. This is unacceptable behavior by any measure.

I am for raising awareness of the problem and demanding that it be stopped. Everyone I have spoken with about my experiences as a clinic safety escort has been shocked. They always say, “Well, they can’t do that, can they?

“Why don’t the police make them stop?”

It’s as if we are the blacks at the lunch counters in the 50’s and 60’s, and the police are snickering with the white racists who taunt and shove us.

    We Shall Not Be Moved.

  2. Powerful video, indeed. I’m a provider, so I’m not stranger to this craziness, but it’s still so hard to watch. Endless props to you.
